Lower East Side Jewish Rialto Walking Tour

This Tour Covers About 40% of the Area of the Jewish Heritage Walking Tour #1 And Features:
A walk through the Yiddish Rialto and a look at some former Yiddish Theaters. We will stop by the home of Emma Goldman and the Second Avenue Deli (a Lower East Side version of Growman's Chinese restaurant in Hollywood in that it uses it's side walk to commemorate its past.) We will be walking through an area that once was part of the Lower East Side but today it is called the East Village.

Each participant is given an itinerary with 12 stops that include five New York City landmarks and three National landmarks. Each stop is fully discussed.

Some Highlights Are:

  • landmark movie theater originally the "Yiddish Arts Theater" (Maurice Schwartz - Mr. Second Ave.)
  • The site of the original: Second Avenue Deli. & The Walkway of Yiddish Actors
  • Another surviving theater from the Yiddish Rialto
  • George and Ira Gershwin lived here as teenagers
  • The Community Synagogue
  • Two landmark institutional buildings that survived from 1884
  • The tenement building where Emma Goldman lived and other tenements and exactly what they were and how they differed from apartment houses?
  • A building that was the "Hebrew Technical School" and today is a part of NYU
  • The Hebrew Actors Union and Actors Club Bldg.
  • The Labor Lyceum (forming the International Ladies Garment Workers Union)
  • The first building to house a production of Yiddish Theater in New York
  • Minimalist composer Philip Glass lived here 1957
  • The site of the "Cafe Royal" also known as the "Yiddish Sardi's"
  • Optional: HIAS and The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire building / story, both stops are not on the lower east side.
